Pointe Graphic Design App for the iPad
This project aims to design a full-fledged graphic design app for iPad, similar to Canva. The reason for this is the current lack of extensive graphic design apps for smaller screens. This project involves only the app design and not a landing page for the product. See the full journey below.
Brand Identity and Product Structure
Brand Identity and Structure
I first began with creating the target user types for Pointe. We aim to target professionals and students alike, so the app must be feature-complete. See the user types below.
I also created a brand exploration, high-level experience map (HLEM) for each user type, and an app architecture below. The name Pointe was chosen to provide a graphic-related name (similar to pen and vector points).
Next up, I created a set of wireframes based on the app structure and the user type goals, as it is important to include all necessary features and options for most user groups. Features include: brush painting, text, image, shape, vector, and more.
The layout involves hiding panels, and widgets to allow for touch support and maximizing screen real estate for the canvas.
3. Design System
I initially made a set of foundations for the app implemented using Figma Variables. Adhering to these set of design tokens allows consistency in the app UI. Afterwards, a few components we made to easily import elements into the designs (including interactions).
Following the wireframes, I got started creating the high-fidelity screens. I applied the typography and colors in the foundations file for a consistent aesthetic. The flow of showing each feature is tied to minimized panels and widgets that can be opened by touch or by pen, with some settings found in nested interactions.
See the completed designs with descriptions below.
